Frequently Asked Questions About Scrip

CMCLS Scrip Introduction Letter

What is Scrip?

Scrip is a term that means "substitute money."  When CMCLS families purchase scrip, they are buying gift certificates that are used just like cash.  The scrip is issued by the national and local retailers where CMCLS families already shop.  These merchants want to support nonprofit organizations and in return ask you to support them by shopping with scrip at their stores.  CMCLS families can use scrip to purchase everyday expenses like food, clothing and other essentials.  With every purchase, they earn revenue for the CMCLS.

How does Scrip earn revenue for the CMCLS ?

Scrip gift cards and certificates are purchased through the Great Lakes Scrip Center, an organization that acts on behalf of churches, schools and other non-profit organizations to purchase large amounts of scrip from retailers.  Because the scrip is purchased with cash up front, the participating retailers offer a substantial discount.  The CMCLS then buys the scrip from Great Lakes Scrip Center at a discount and resells it to CMCLS families for full face value.  The bulk of the discount, from 1.5% to 15% or more, is retained by the CMCLS as school fund.

Why has the CMCLS chosen this fundraiser?

The advantage of the scrip program is that parents simply spend money that they would have spent anyway -- for groceries, gasoline, clothing, school supplies, toys, gifts, entertainment, and travel.  The revenue to the CMCLS comes from the retailers' contributions, not extra donations from the CMCLS community.

Where can Scrip be used?

Generally, scrip can be used at any location of participating retailers.  However, before you order any retailer's scrip, you should read the terms and conditions for that retailer.

Can I use scrip for online purchases?

Some retailers like Amazon.com and Lands End allow scrip to be used for online purchases.  See the terms and conditions page for details.

Why can't I find my favorite retailer or restaurant?

Check the full  Retailer list  in the Great Lakes Scrip Center to make sure that they aren't listed under a different name; for example, Marshalls and HomeGoods use the T J Maxx card, Pottery Barn uses the Williams Sonoma card, and Olive Garden uses the Red Lobster Card.  Check during the year; new organizations are regularly added.  But not all companies choose to participate in the scrip fundraising program.

When should my order arrive?

Unless a particular gift card is backordered, it should arrive at the scrip coordinator's house and be ready for pickup within a week after the order deadline.

How will my order be delivered?

Since the scrip certificates are fully negotiable, like cash, we would like you or your kid to pick up the scrip order from the scrip coordinator in person.

Is Scrip returnable?

The CMCLS orders the scrip gift cards for you; they are not returnable.  Please read the terms of the cards before ordering.

Are Scrip certificate purchases tax-deductible?

No, since you receive dollar for dollar value for your purchase, the scrip orders  are tax-deductible.
